Cotton cover fabric N1 is a natural, undyed top cover made from 100 % cotton with a weight of 185 gsm and a width of 160 cm. It is fitted as the uppermost layer on ironing tables, pressing machines and calenders and is therefore the layer in direct contact with the garment.
Where is cotton cover fabric N1 used?
N1 is the standard cover in alteration workshops, laundries, dry cleaners and industrial pressing departments. On ironing tables it forms the absorbent top layer above the padding, on pressing machines it covers upper and lower plates, and on calenders it serves as wrapping material. At 185 gsm it sits exactly in the range where a cover still passes enough steam while being robust enough for continuous operation.
What are the technical properties?
The fabric is 100 % cotton in natural, unbleached quality without optical brighteners. It therefore discolours far more slowly under heat than bleached qualities and releases no chemicals onto the garment. Cotton withstands contact temperatures of roughly 150 °C continuously. The open structure moves steam upwards and residual moisture towards the extraction instead of trapping it inside the padding.
How is N1 ordered and fitted?
N1 is supplied by the metre from a 30 m roll, minimum order one running metre at 160 cm width. Allow 10 to 15 cm of extra material on each side so the cover can be fixed underneath the plate with tension springs or a draw string. Replace the cover as soon as it becomes shiny, hardened or starts leaving marks on delicate fabrics.

How often should the ironing cloth be replaced?
In single-shift operation N1 typically lasts several months depending on steam volume and garment type. Hardened, shiny or discoloured areas are the signal to replace it, as they cause shine on the garment.
Is N1 suitable for delicate outer fabrics?
Yes, as a top cover. For very delicate materials such as cashmere or velvet, combine it with an anti-lustre fabric or bristle knit.
Which widths are available?
160 cm is standard. Wider requirements are covered by the GN12 quality in 192 cm and 230 cm.
